Stormont Vail Hospital : Emergency Room - Topeka, Kansas

3 hour wait! One lady there said the ambulance brought her to wait in the waiting room and she had been there 3 hours. A homeless man was roaming around the waiting room, bothering people and stinking it up. There was also man hanging out in the woman's bathroom. Security didn't do anything about that. We left and drove an hour to our local hospital and got in immediately. What a poor experience.

I’ve been here for over three hours so far. I’m in waiting room 2, which is very crammed, with three homeless appearing patients that smell very unpleasant and a lady whose boyfriend isn’t great smelling either. I approached the desk to talk to a nurse who has a headphone in one ear and playing with her phone. I asked her if she knew how long it may be because I’ve been here for so long. She stated they’ll get to me as soon as possible “there’s been people waiting since noon”. I then asked politely if I could move waiting rooms because the smell of others in mine were making my nausea worse. She laughed and cockily asked another nurse to move me before she sat back down to continue playing on her phone. I definitely don’t recommend.

The care was excellent. The staff was great however, my room was dirty.Very Dirty, the bed had something in it that looked like bodily fluid under the sheet they put on top of the hospital Gurnee. The over all appearance of the room was not clean.

We drove to Topeka after a terrible experience at the ER in Lawrence. Unfortunately things are not much better here. The wait times are extreme and even when you get into a room no one checks on you or communicates with you what so ever. It’s been 6 hours and we still have no answers. 6 hours with no vital signs , no testing. nothing. Ridiculous. This can hardly be called medical care. If you are able to drive to Overland Park for medical care- do.

We waited 2 hours before we even saw a Dr. the entire visit took 6 hours. Very little interaction with nursing staff as they were all to busy talking about everything but work. Absolutely zero sense of urgency! Seems to be very poorly managed. Not sure why we fill these out? They don’t t give a crap and aren’t going to do anything about it. Absolutely and by far the worst Hospital out of 5 I have ever been in.

I sat in this waiting room for over 3 hours while bleeding while pregnant and not once did anyone check the status of my babies health. I will never return to this place.

Room for improvement

Pros:
The care here is top notch.
The staff is friendly and good at their jobs.

Cons:
The phone system. When you’ve seen a doctor or taken a test, they’ll call you to get in touch; but if you miss that call and they leave you a voicemail, you cannot call it back. No matter what number your doctor/nurse/etc. gives you, you’ll be routed back to Stormont main line and if they pick up, they won’t know who/what you’re talking about and place you on hold. For hours.
It can be confusing to figure out where you’re going and if you ask the wrong people (?) you’ll walk around the block trying to get in. People you talk to assume you know the place.
The billing department is very aggressive, even when they make a mistake.
